Vowel placement during operatic singing: 'come si parla' or 'aggiustamento'?

This study explored two tenets of the Italian Bel Canto operatic singing technique “Come si parla” and “aggiustamento.” Articulatory changes in the lower formant vowel space of 11 spoken and sung vowels were systematically examined in six male singers. Results showed that singers influence the placement of the lowest formant frequencies in the sung vowel space using both a lowered larynx and mo...

Six-Month-Old Infants Prefer Speech with Raised Formant Frequencies

Voices can be characterized by their fundamental frequency as well as by speech timbre characteristics, such as formant frequencies. While infants’ responses to fundamental frequency characteristics are well established, very little is known about how infants respond to changes in formant frequencies. This study tested whether 6-month-old infants prefer listening to speech with raised formant f...

Effects of duration and formant movement on vowel perception

Acoustical analysis of speech and perceptual studies indicate that the dominant acoustic correlates of vowel perception are the frequencies of the first three formants. However, most vowels are not completely steady-state (even in isolation) and formant frequencies change with variation in the surrounding consonantal context, prosodic influences, speaking rate, and vocal tract length of the tal...

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels

This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...

An effect of formant amplitude in vowel perception

A psycho-acoustical experiment was conducted using synthetic vowel-like stimuli to examine effect of formant amplitude in vowel perception. Nine combinations of formant frequencies were examined. For each combination, relative amplitude of the third to the second formants was modified in seven degrees. In eight of the nine combinations, perceived vowels were changed according to the formant amp...
